Catharina’s at Steenberg (the first farm in the cape) was named after the pioneering woman who sailed to the cape in 1662, disguised as a man. She endured an array of fateful encounters including losing three husbands to a lion, a Tribesman and an elephant, in turn. Read more about her, she was amazing.
The winter menu is beautiful and includes starters such as French onion soup, gruyere, croutons or duck wontons, miso mayonnaise, bean sprout, pickled ginger and spring onion, wasabi and soya vinaigrette. Paired with a Steenberg Sphynx Chardonnay 2017.
For mains they have smoked aubergine and bocconcini risotto, chopped coriander, semi dried tomato and pine nut salad or roast chicken breast, bacon and mushroom duxelle mash, baby carrot and courgette, mushroom sauce. Paired with a Steenberg Stately Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz Blend 2015.
And desserts feature sticky date pudding, pumpkin ice cream, macaroon, caramel espuma, cocoa snap or poached winter fruits, cinnamon ice cream, pain d’épices and mulled wine.
