During your explorations of the “deep south” in the Western Cape, including Cape Point and beautiful Kommetjie, you’ll want to take a day for the historic Kalk Bay and Simonstown. Crammed with little boutique clothing stores, eateries and a vast assortment of antiquities dealers, Kalk Bay is squashed between the ocean, the scenic train line and rugged mountain ranges. The mountains themselves contain several hiking trails through Echo Valley and Spes Bona Forest, with varying degrees of difficulty. For starters, you’ll want to mosey on over to Boulders (before Simonstown on the way from Cape Point) to visit the penguins.
Boulders Bay Penguins
At Boulders you will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage in an absolutely unique and enchanting experience where you swim in azure clear waters, amongst penguins and white sand beaches. Boulders Beach is a huge African Penguin breeding colony, and offers unparalleled viewing of these vocal and numerous birds. The water here is slightly warmer and thus more pleasant to bathe in, try and visit in the morning, before the midday heat.
