Cape Town has the advantages of being a port and very cosmopolitan but with easy access to genuine African experiences and our rich cultural history. We are exploring the food, the tradition and the Big 5 this week, enjoy!
One of the best things about Aquila Game Reserve is the fact that a mere 2 hour drive from the center of cosmopolitan Cape Town brings you face to face with the famed African Big Five (lions, rhino, buffalo, elephants and leopard).
There is also the fantastic option of a 1 or 2 day fly-in safari, where you get a chance to observe the stunning Hex River Mountains (the second highest mountain range in the Western Cape) on a flight that takes 20-30 minutes. More than a 170 different species of bird, buck, hippo and giraffe are to be found here too, with the wildlife experience being intimate and indelibly memorable, and the guides incredibly knowledgeable and amicable. Whether by horseback, quad bike or 4x4, the ways in which to explore this wilderness are as varied as the wildlife, we highly recommend the slow champagne sunset safari.
There are various options for accommodation ranging from functional (but still fairly opulent) to premier luxury, if you choose to stay the night (or several). Aquila has been instrumental in the conservation of lions, rhino, the Black Eagle through various trusts and funds that it actively supports and spearheads, this includes veld restoration (to thatch the cottages at Aquila, thousands of non-indigenous trees were cut down and replaced with over 2000 indigenous varieties) and being responsible for saving the Robben Island antelope from starvation and extinction.
