The Breedekloof wine district boasts a total of 28 wine cellars (11 producer cellars and 17 private cellars), making it a stunning place to explore fine wines and great cuisine. Such as, wine and soup! It may just prove to be the next big thing in winter pairings, and definitely worth an exploration.
The festival includes live entertainment by various artists such as Black Byrd at Deetlefs Wine Estate, Klipwerf Boereorkes at Opstal Estate, Viljoen Retief & Twee at Merwida and a 5 course-Soetes & Soup pairing dinner with celebrated Chef Pete Goffe-Wood at Bosjes.
A great dawdle through the countryside, enjoying hearty soup, great reds and sublime dessert wines.
The little Karoo town of Calitzdorp lies on Route 62, about four hours drive from Cape Town and about half way to Port Elizabeth. The Klein Karoo is a stunning part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, sparse, dry and arid countryside interspersed with amazingly lush valleys.
At the festival, heavenly foods abound, everybody and their aunt is out in full force to prepare, plate and eat amazing food, taste beautiful wines and possibly engage in a lively game of Petanque (Boules).
Live music, a fun run, a parade with floats and distillery demonstrations are amongst the more niche entertainments.
Worth the long drive, for the views and surroundings alone. :-)
Tulbagh is named after Dutch Cape Colony Governor Ryk Tulbagh, is a town located in the Winelands of the Western Cape. The basin is fringed on three sides by mountains, and is drained by the Klein Berg river and its tributaries.
Tulbagh also has another, more recent, tradition. They celebrate Christmas in Winter (i dichotomy here in the Southern Hemisphere), and it's a wonderful celebration at that.
Expect a christmassy-decorated village, wine tastings, art and crafts, traditional Christmas dinners, stalls and entertainment. A whole lot of wholesome eats and good fun. For a full itinerary, consult the Facebook Page :-)
