Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of Africa. Translated to mean ‘place of gold', Gauteng has transformed itself from being the gritty place where gold was discovered in the late 1800s to a vibrant hub of wealth, tourism and transformation. Today, the province’s charm can be attributed to its multicultural mix of dynamic people and to the many places of beauty found tucked between its urban spaces.

Whether you’re exploring Gauteng to explore its secret hideaways, learn more about its rich history and culture, or to simply indulge in some of the best shopping South Africa has to offer, there’s something for everyone. In terms of Gauteng accommodation, you’ll be spoilt for choice: expect to find everything from luxury city apartments, self-catering units and intimate bed & breakfasts to hostels and caravan sites.

As a destination, Gauteng has lots to see and do. Discover the beautiful peaks of the Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountain ranges, explore the beautiful vistas of the Leeuwkloof Valley Conservancy, sway to the rhythm of the Vaal River, and walk under one of Pretoria’s 50 000 charming purple jacaranda trees. Main attractions include the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site – consisting of 13 excavated sites with the fossilized forms of animals and hominids, the Tswaing Crater’s meteorite site and eco-museum, the national heritage site Constitution Hill, and the Gold Reef City complex, with its theme park, apartheid museum and casino facilities. Don’t leave Johannesburg and Pretoria without taking a township tour of historical Soweto and seeing Sir Herbert Baker’s masterpiece, the Union Buildings, respectively.

For a taste of the flora and fauna Gauteng has to offer, visit the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, both in Pretoria. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort has over 300 hectares of plant and bird species, while the Pilanesberg National Park contains the Big Five in addition to other game. Hartbeespoort Dam is another firm favourite situated on the hills of the Magaliesberg, where activities include parasailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, hang-gliding and hot air ballooning. Animal sanctuaries such as the Cheetah & Wildlife Centre and the Lion Park allow you to get up-close-and-personal with animals such as the rare white lion, giraffe and cheetah.

Known for its malls on seemingly every second corner, Gauteng is paradise for the serious shopper. Head off to larger malls such as Sandton City Centre, Sandton Square, Hyde Park Corner, Eastgate Mall (near the airport), Fourways Mall, Monte Casino and Clearwater Mall. These malls stock everything from international haute couture and local accessories to African curios and fine art, and they have fabulous food halls and restaurants. For great souveniers and bargain buys, explore the Bruma Lake Flea Market, the Rooftop Market in the Rosebank Mall, the Oriental Plaza and the Crafters Market at Fourways Crossing. Here, you’ll also find African art from all over Africa – ranging from traditional masks, wooden carvings, beaded dolls to wire baskets and toys.
