South Africa
is a country with pockets of places to explore. Considered to be universe unto itself, the country offers its visitor both bush and beach, with its abundant wildlife and seemingly endless stretches of coastline. Whether you're exploring South Africa to experience its unique natural beauty, rich culture and history, adventure sports, or wildlife, there's something for everyone. Best of all, South African accommodation is so varied and vast that you'll be spoilt for both budget and luxury options, and cheap flights to South Africa are easily available.
As a destination, South Africa has much to offer. Split into nine provinces, each province offers something different, something distinctive, something spectacular. Explore the grassy flat planes of the North West province, the full rivers of the Free State, the deserts of the Northern Cape, the lush forests of Mpumalanga or the colourful vibrancy of the Western Cape. Our diversity in terms of landscape is what attracts visitors from all over the globe. And who wouldn't want to explore a country which enjoys such amazing weather, where some provinces experience over 300 days of sunshine a year?
The rich culture and history of South Africa is another reason why people opt to explore the country up-close-and-personal. Despite decades of colonisation and apartheid, our country today is known for its humanity and democracy – our struggle activists and political liberals revered. Our diversity in cultures is celebrated: it adds spice to the swirling melting pot that is the Rainbow Nation. Today, South Africa has 11 official languages. To experience South African hospitality and learn more about our heritage, visit one of many cultural villages dotted throughout the country or spend an afternoon at a national museum.
Other things to do include exploring the origins of ancient man and fossilized caves. The Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng is one of the richest hominid fossil sites in the world, while the West Coast Fossil Park showcases fossils that date back to 20 million years ago. Both World Heritage sites, they testify to humanity's origins on the African continent.
If adventure sports is more your thing, you're sure to get your adrenaline fix here. South Africa offers surfing, diving, hiking, horseback safaris, mountain biking, river rafting, hang gliding and just about any other extreme sport you can think of! Don't leave South Africa without abseiling off Table Mountain, going houseboating on the Vaal River, hot air ballooning near the Blyde River Canyon, cage-diving with Great White Sharks, and tubing or river rafting in Stormsriver.
South Africa is also a well-known shopper's paradise – you'll be blown away at the range of products available. From South African chainstores to niche boutiques and incredible indoor markets, you'll find great souveniers and gifts to take home. Shopping musts include the V&A Waterfront and Craft Market in Cape Town, the Bruma Market in Johannesburg, Casterbridge Farm near the Kruger National Park, and the Premier Diamond Mine near Pretoria.
Whatever you're looking for – be it adventure or tranquility – South Africa has something to offer everyone.
