welcome to the
Western Cape is the only place in the world where spectacular coastline, Southern Right whales and abundant fynbos can be all found in one province. Considered to be one of the most beautiful provinces in South Africa, the Western Cape has so much to offer. It’s blessed with six very diverse tourism regions, each offering vastly different landscapes, activities and histories. Best of all, Western Cape accommodation is so varied and vast that you’ll be spoilt for choice in terms of both budget and luxury options.

Whether you’re travelling to the Western Cape to experience its breathtaking sights, rich culture, abundant adventure sports, or awe-inspiring marine life, there’s something for everyone. Discover the lush forests of the Garden Route, the arid planes of the Karoo, the stark coastline of the West Coast, the valley views of the Winelands, and the bohemian spirit of Cape Town. The top attractions not to be missed include Table Bay Mountain for 360 degree views of Cape Town, the World Heritage site Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Hermanus in the Overberg for amazing whale sightings, and Cape Aghulhus where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.

Other activities to enjoy include visiting the West Coast National Park (September is the best month to go!), hiking up Table Mountain, boating on Knysna Lagoon, exploring Kalk Bay’s numerous caves, and spotting rock art at the Cederberg Wilderness Area. If you prefer something a little more exciting to get the blood pumping, opt for abseiling off Table Mountain, bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge, shark cage-diving on the False Bay coast, and white water canoeing on the Breede River. Or, with the many Western Cape’s pristine beaches, you can simply spend your time unwinding under white sands and the African sun.

If you’re an ardent foodie, the Western Cape has loads of surprises in store for you. Because of the diverse cultures found in the Cape – including British, Indonesian, French, Dutch, Indian, German, Khoisan and African – the local gourmet scene is equally varied. Enjoy slow food on unofficial tapas trail in Cape Town’s CBD, Malay delicacies in Bo Kaap, township food in Gugulethu, and fish braai on the West Coast. From November, locals head off to places such as Doring Bay, Strandfontein and Lamberts Bay to indulge their passion for rock lobster. Besides fresh fish, people of the Cape have strong love for locally made wines. Most wine farms in the Western Cape are open for sampling and house well renowned restaurants where the perfect dish is paired with the perfect wine. Venture off to places such as Worcester, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Olifants River Valley and Durbanville Winelands where there are designated self-drive wine routes.

For that last minute gift or souvenier, head off to malls such as the V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk
Century City, or Willowbridge’s open-air shopping village for top-end items, or to places such as
Green Market Square, the Pan African Market and Kenilworth’s Access Park for great bargain buys.
